Salling Group
Replatforming for the Future: Building a Scalable E-Commerce Powerhouse
2019 - 2021

Scale
Large
Revenue and amount of concurrent users together with the team size driving the project.

Cost of failure
High
With yearly revenue around 1.5B DKK downtime is costly.
Performance opportunity
Medium
Improving conversion rate of just small amounts on a high revenue leads to significant performance opportunities.
Domain complexity
Medium
Classic e-commerce complexity with well known data models and abstractions. Size of the project, amount of data etc. increases complexity.
The challenge
Salling Group, a leading Scandinavian retailer, sought to replatform its entire e-commerce ecosystem, including bilka.dk, føtex.dk, br.dk, and wupti.com. Their legacy monolithic platform was limiting scalability, agility, and overall system performance, especially given the high traffic and revenue expectations. With over 1.5 billion DKK in annual revenue, even a few minutes of downtime could be costly. The task was to design and build a modern, scalable architecture that could support their growing digital business and deliver a seamless shopping experience across multiple brands.
Our contribution
As trusted partners, we guided Salling Group through the entire replatforming journey, from design to architecture to implementation. Our team helped transition them away from their outdated monolithic architecture to a modern, modular system based on microservices and cloud-native technologies. The new platform is highly scalable, resilient, and capable of handling millions of transactions without performance degradation. With a 20+ member team, we delivered a robust, high-performing solution that not only supports Salling Group's current needs but also scales seamlessly as their e-commerce empire grows. The replatforming has resulted in improved performance, reduced downtime, and a smoother user experience, positioning Salling Group for continued digital success.
